A new command

Mission: Establishing a base
Location: Earth
Timeline: Current

Jessica sat down on the deck, overlooking the beach, it was in the Carey family for generations. Five hundred years to be exact, many wanted it to develop the land for profit, for tourism, it was fought each time, finally they stopped altogether. That was centuries ago, now... it was still as it was, tourism did still come, but it was on their terms, as it should be.

Alex walked up, slight limp from a long career as a starfleet Captain, refusing any promotion that would have taken him away from the ship. "All set for retirement?"

Jessica turned, "Now more than ever, we have done our service time to relax." She kissed him, then turned and leaned against him. Moments later, his arms wrapped around her.

"Melissa, John and Jesse are off to their postings. All ships. We did good." Alex replied, "But what do we do?"

Jessica paused a moment, "I... don't know."

"This retirement thing isn't going to work is it?" Alex inquired

"We are only in our fifties, I was the youngest Admiral in the history of starfleet, there is not much more to do." Jessica replied as she turned.

Alex thought about it. Handing her a padd... "Starbase Pegasus needs a commander."

Jessica turned her head, "Starbase Pegasus is no more, we destroyed the station in the Pegasus Galaxy years ago." It was the only blemish on her record. Her second command, in the Pegasus Galaxy. Meeting up with the Narvians, a race of human descendants from earth thousands of years ago, had succeeded in running them out of the galaxy. Intent on waging war with the federation, the fleets that did make it back from the Pegasus wormhole, managed to seal it for good.

"Perhaps your Pegasus, but they are building a new one in the milky way, in the area known as the void." Alex replied as he watched her reaction. "Starfleet doesn't blame you for the retreat, it saved many."

"We abandonned the colony,"

Alex leaned against a tree that was next to them, "You and I know that was not the case, it was the first place they hit."

"I know. It says here rank of fleet admiral, and seeing that its so far out, they are establishing a starfleet HQ on that end... once the colony is set up on the planet the starbase will be orbitting."

"I take it as?"

"Its a yes." Jessica replied as she read the paper. "Good thing i hadn't handed my retirement papers yet."

"Same here, I have actually been given command of the USS Jeronimo. Which will be patrolling the systems closest to the starbase, while the Iroquois does the real exploring."

"You in a patrol ship, I don't see you doing that for long Alex."

"Neither do I," Alex replied, "But bein close to you will have its advantages."
